International Trails Day

Hike at Markland
02 June, 2018

On Saturday, June 2nd, members of the Icelandic Memorial Society of Nova Scotia greeted 13 hikers at the cairn in Markland to celebrate International Trails Day. This was the 16th annual walk through Markland to mark this event. Although it was a wet, rainy morning and the newly graded road made walking somewhat harder, this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the hikers who made their way into the log cabin on Lot 3 and back to the cairn site for a picnic lunch . Among the members present were Olafur Egilsson and his daughter Julie Egilsson Battist, William Scott, Harley and Beverley Redden, Marshall Burgess, Kathryn Thor, Fraser Nicholson, Wayne Scott, Kathy Didkowsky, Betty Belmore, Bonnie Price and Glenda Burrows. The Trails Day hike is one of our favourite yearly events and our special way of honouring the spirit of the hardy Icelandic settlers who made Markland their home from 1875-1882.
