For the past year and a half the Society has been working to obtain funding for our Log Cabin project for Markland. This log cabin replica will be built as a memorial tribute to Eleanor (Dolly) Belmore, Past Chair and Co founder of our Society. As you know, Dolly was passionate and committed to the restoration of the old settlement. She worked tirelessly up until the time of her death researching and preserving the history and stories of the Markland settlers. It was always her wish that a log cabin be built in the settlement, which would serve as an interpretive site.
The log cabin replica, which will serve as a kiosk, will be built on Lot 3 (Stadartunga).
This lot belonged to Sigurdur Jonsson.The first of his two sons, Brynjolfur Sigurdsson was born there in 1875 and was the first Icelandic child born in Nova Scotia. The site will be easily accessible from the road and already has some cleared areas with ferns, an old apple tree and hop vines. Society members have located the original well and know the approximate location of the family's barn. It is our Society's goal to build the log cabin replica as closely as possible to the descriptions from our records.
In May we received cabinet approval for our lease application for the lot and are now ready to go ahead with the survey, which is the last step in securing the lease. We are really happy to report that we have recently received funding from HRM Grants committee and a donation from Councilor Steve Streatch, which will cover the cost of the survey and site preparation. We have been promised a donation of logs delivered to the site when we have secured the land in the Society's name. We are hopeful to have the survey completed this fall so that we may begin the building of the replica in the summer of 2010.The society will gladly accept donations for this project as we begin the construction phase.
