Log Cabin at Markland

Dolly Belmore was one of the founding members of the Icelandic Memorial Society of Nova Scotia, formed in 1998. She served as chair from 1998 until 2008. Dolly spent many years researching and preserving the history and stories of the Icelandic settlers of Markland and was passionately committed to the restoration of the old settlement. Her longtime dream was to have a log cabin built there to honour the Icelandic pioneers and serve as an interpretive site. Memorial money from the Estate of Dolly Belmore was used to provide seed funding for this project.

It gives the Society great pleasure to dedicate the log cabin to Dolly Belmore in recognition of all the work she did for the Icelandic Society and the Icelandic people.

ABOUT US

The Icelandic Memorial Society of Nova Scotia was incorporated on July 29, 1998 to educate the public about Nova Scotia's Icelandic past. By sharing the history of the Icelandic settlers in Nova Scotia during the late 1800s, we hope to assist and encourage their descendents and others to preserve this part of Nova Scotia's heritage.
